The day, which marks the signing of the UNESCO-ILO Recommendation on the Status of Education Personnel in 1966, is now an important lobbying day for educators around the world to make governments put in place the terms laid down in the document.

"In 2007 EI and its affiliates want to make clear that better working conditions for teachers mean better learning conditions for learners. We demand a decent working environment, living wages, equal pay and equal rights for women, initial and ongoing professional development, involvement in policy-making and last but not least collective bargaining to defend and enhance teachers’ rights," said Nxesi, in his address to the Congress participants.

Commanditée par le ministère de l'Éducation, une étude sur le niveau de la langue anglaise dans nos collèges a été conduite par le British Council (BC) entre février et juin dernier. Le rapport sur les résultats de cette étude a été rendu public hier au Mauritius Institute of Education et a été présenté par le directeur du BC, Simon Ingram-Hill. Le rapport recommande entre autres une politique " which supports the creation of a population bilingual in the two international languages English and French ".

L'étude a été menée auprès de 2 200 collégiens de Form I-III (11 -14 ans), issus de 22 collèges de l'île. Pour des raisons pratiques, Rodrigues n'a pu être impliquée. Quatre types d'établissements étaient ciblés, notamment le prévocationnel (5 collèges), les collèges d'État (4), les collèges privés bénéficiant du financement de l'État (5) et les collèges qualifiés de Higher Performing Secondary Schools (8).

PROJET DE R�FORME: Vers un examen national en Form III

Un diplôme qui indiquera les compétences acquises jusqu’en «Form III» : le National Certificate of Achievement. Telle est une des propositions incluses dans la stratégie de réformes approuvée par le Conseil des ministres hier. Les autres suggestions concernent l’évaluation continue qui sera intégrée au Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) et l’allègement du programme d’études.

Le document intitulé, «Towards a quality curriculum», tient compte des suggestions de pédagogues, syndicalistes et partenaires de l’Education notamment lors du débat national sur la révision du curriculum l’année dernière.

KICK-BOXING – CHAMPIONNATS DU MONDE JUNIORS

Fabrice Bauluck (-54 kg) n'a pas raté son rendez-vous avec l'exploit hier à Zadar, Croatie. Il a battu aux points, lors de son entrée en compétition, le Russe Ivan Kondrovkyev, tombeur du champion du monde en titre, le Kirghiz Gulzhigit Fhermatov, jeudi en quart de finale. Il s'est mesuré au Kazakh Asset Taiganov en finale, cet après-midi.

Fabrice Bauluck a ainsi remporté son deuxième titre de champion du monde junior en deux ans.

Judex Jeannot, responsable de l'élite au sein de la Fédération mauricienne de kick-boxing, était vraiment très heureux de cette victoire. " Fabrice a très bien boxé. Il a sorti une superbe boxe, je suis très content.

Le consultant estime que les résultats des élèves ne correspondent pas à leurs capacités réelles. Il préconise, entre autres, l’abolition de l’évaluation continue et plus d’accent sur les compétences.

● Quel est le constat après vos recherches sur notre système éducatif pour le compte de l’Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) ?

Pendant trop longtemps le système mauricien a produit des personnes dont les résultats ne correspondent pas à leurs capacités réelles (underachievers). L’objectif ultime de chaque système devrait être d’accroître les compétences (learning outcome), mais actuellement, chez nous, ce n’est pas le cas.

● Quels sont les principaux maux dont souffre notre système éducatif ?
